Vegetation Management and Robotic Mowing at Shell Norco Energy and Chemicals Park

Location: Norco, LA
Project Scope:

At Shell Norco, Mullin has logged over 30,000 manhours without a single incident—a milestone made possible by our multi-faceted safety program. We integrated superintendent-led processes, a strong culture of safety, and strategic investments in technology, such as robotic mowing and targeted chemical services. Tank farms are uniquely challenging environments due to their steep embankments and dense networks of pipelines, making traditional maintenance both difficult and hazardous. By pairing proven safety processes with innovation, Mullin ensured safe, efficient, and reliable grounds management across the facility’s expansive operations.

Spanning an 880-acre parcel with more than 6.5 million square feet of slope mowing each season, Shell Norco required a solution that prioritized both safety and performance. Mullin’s integration of robotic mowing and plant growth regulation reduced worker exposure on steep, hazardous terrain by 20%, while maintaining consistent, high-quality vegetation control. This balance of technology and process-driven safety measures not only minimized risk but also set a new standard for reliable grounds management in one of the industry’s most sensitive environments.
